The Salwar Kameez (Shalwar qameez) is the main type of traditional attire of women in South Asia like Pakistan and India.
It consists of three pieces of clothing: Salwar, which is the bottom piece, Kurta- which is the top and Chunni or Dupatta, which is an accessory.
Salwar:
It is a loose trouser resembling a pajama. The top part of the Salwar, near the waist, is wider than the bottom, near the ankles. The salwar is gathered at the waist and held in position by a draw string. Sometimes an elastic band serves the same purpose. Salwars have been subject to many innovations. The Salwar has changed its traditional shape: It can be either baggier or narrower. A narrow version is called the Churidar where the bottom is hunched together in gathers. Variations are called as Sharara Salwar, Patiala Salwar, Dhoti Salwar, Parallel Salwar, etc.
Kameez:
The Kameez or Kurta in the ensemble can be likened to a blouse, tunic or a long shirt. The design of the traditional Kameez includes a side opening below the waistline to provide more ease of movement. The traditional design is straight cut and flat. The modern Kurta is made of different types of cuts and shapes. They may feature cap sleeves, deep necklines, sleeveless kurta designs, etc. Short Kurtas, also called as Kurtis, have become modern fashion statements, which can be worn with trousers and jeans. Other forms of Kurtas include A-line, frock type, empire waist, Anarkali kurtas, etc. When Kurtas are made of transparent fabrics, many women wear a short camisole underneath the Kurta.
Dupatta:
Salwar suits (salwar kurta) are usually enhanced by the accessory of Chunni or dupatta- a long scarf. Originally meant to convey modesty, today it has become a symbol of fashion statement to enhance the beauty of the Salwar Kameez. It can be draped around the shoulder, worn over the chest or around both shoulders: any way liked by the wearer. Some Salwar suits are worn without any dupatta as in West inspired wear.
