Festivals are an integral part of Indian culture. These are ideal occasion where family, friends and neighbours gather to celebrate the occasion with fun and fervour. Old ties are renewed and new ties forged at these occasions. There are probably more festivals for celebration rather than months in a year. These celebrations have seasonal, social and religious connotations.
Women have a great variety of outfits to choose from to wear at these occasions. Lehenga Choli is perhaps the most popular dress for brides, but it is now worn by many women at festivals. This dress has always been popular with Rajasthanis, but the dress has become fashionable and worn with great style and appreciation all over India. One can buy festival wear lehenga from garment stores, designer stores or online stores.
Here are a few main festivals and the tips for women wearing outfits:
• Karwa chauth: This is an occasion of fasting where Hindu women pray for the longevity and prosperity of their husbands. This festival is popular among women of north and West like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Celebrated 9 days before another major festival, Diwali, women dress up in colourful clothes in the evening. Most popular are red and pink Sari or a heavily embroidered Lehenga Choli. Some women wear their bridal costume, which they have preserved.
• Teez: This is a festival celebrated in Rajasthan to usher in the monsoon season. Rajasthani women dress up in colourful Ghaghara Cholis to mark this festival.
• Dandiya: It is a traditional, very popular dance festival mostly celebrated in Gujarat. Women perform the traditional Dandiya dance with Dandiya sticks. Guajarati women have to wear Ghaghara Cholis as a compulsion. In the modern times, the Dandiya festival has spread in popularity to other parts of India like Mumbai, Delhi, etc.
• Eid: A sacred festival for Muslims, women love to wear Lehenga Cholis on this occasion.
Two other important festivals of India are Diwali and Holi. Here are a few ideas to dress up at these festivals:
DIWALI: This festival of lights celebrates the past and throws light on the future with peace and joy. Use the first day of Diwali called as Dhanteras to shop for clothing. Make sure the clothes you wear on Diwali day are completely new. Dress in more colourful, more extravagant clothes. Add a lot of jewellery to your Diwali outfit. You can even wear brightly coloured costume jewellery. Decorate your hand with Henna designs or henna tattoos.
HOLI: The festival of colours results in your clothing completely smeared in colours and often rendered unusable after the celebration. But this does not mean you turn up at a Holi party in a shabby dress. There are many ways of wearing white this season. The oldest trick is to wear a monochromatic dress. Examples include a traditional single colour Salwar Kameez, a Kurti paired with white pants, pretty white summer dress, white tee with bright skirt, white tank top paired with printed skirt, etc.
These are some of the ideas to dress up for joyous Indian festivals.
